Zainab Amsari: New CCTV Shows Man Approaching Girl That Was Raped and Killed

Pakistani authorities have released new CCTV footage that shows a man approaching a seven-year-old girl who was later found dead after being raped.

Zainab Ansari vanished as she was on her way to a Koran recital in the city of Kasur on January 4. Her body was found near a rubbish heap about 2 kilometers from her house on January 9.

Police confirmed that she was abducted and said an autopsy revealed that she was raped and subsequently strangled to death.

Building on footage released previously during the investigation, a new video shows the girl walking alongside the man. It is believed the footage shows the last moments of the girl before she disappeared.

Police believe the chilling murder, which sent shock waves across Pakistan, could have been the work of a serial rapist and murderer aged between 25 and 35.

Another eight girls have been kidnapped and raped, and all but one murdered, in Kasur in the past two years.

Authorities released a sketch of the suspect and said DNA has linked the killing of Ansari to at least five other cases, according to the Associated Press.

Zainab's parents were in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah (holy pilgrimage), when she was reported missing. They returned to Pakistan on December 10.

Upon arrival at the Islamabad airport, the girl's father, Ameen Asari, alleged the police did not do anything when the girl was reported missing.

Police denied they have been lax in investigating this or the previous child abduction cases.

Regional police officer Zulfiqar Hameed told Reuters he is confident Zainab's case will be resolved soon.

However, the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court summoned the Inpsector General of Poilce (IGP) due to lack of progress on the case, according to Pakistani outlet Geo TV.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah said the Punjab government and police appeared non-serious about the case after the IGP did not appear in court on Monday, January 15.

Zainab was believed to be aged 7, but some reports have claimed she was aged either 6 or 8. The girl described herself in what appear to be the last pages of her notebook, as a "seven-year-old girl," according to CNN.
