Sevilla Coach Eduardo Berizzo to Undergo Cancer Surgery Less Than a Week After Diagnosis

The Argentine's assistant Ernesto Marcucci will take over his duties in his absence.

"Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo will undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon on the prostate adenocarcinoma which was diagnosed a few days ago," said Sevilla in a statement.

"The Argentine coach's return to the bench will depend both on the operation and his recovery afterwards. Sevilla is confident he will return as soon as possible."

The Andalusians hosts Cartagena in a King's Cup last 32 tie on Wednesday in which it holds a 3-0 lead from the first leg.

Berizzo, 48, watched his Sevilla side recover from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Liverpool in a Champions League group stage match last Tuesday before they fought back from 2-0 down to beat Villarreal 3-2 in La Liga on Sunday.

The comeback against Villarreal saw Sevilla remain fifth in the league, two points behind fourth-place Real Madrid and 10 points off leader Barcelona. Initial reports suggested Berizzo told his players of the diagnosis at half-time of the draw with Liverpool, with his team celebrating Guido Pizarro's injury-time equalizer with him. But Sevilla denies this.

"I didn't use such a delicate situation as this. I have enough tact and other arguments," Berizzo said, as quoted by the BBC.

"I don't like being the focus of attention.

"In my job, the players are the most important ones but I thank them for that gesture of support and for showing faith in their coach."

Berizzo took over at Sevilla in the close season after three campaigns at Celta Vigo, which he also played for between 2001-05. He replaced fellow countryman Jorge Sampaoli as head coach at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, with Sampaoli being appointed as the new manager of the Argentina national team.

Sampaoli led Sevilla to fourth in the table last season, but his team was knockout out of the Champions League by English Premier League side Leicester City.
