Arsenal and Tottenham Battle for Wantaway Real Madrid Midfielder Dani Ceballos

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are among the clubs looking to sign Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos when the January transfer window opens, according to reports.

Ceballos only joined the La Liga giant in the summer, signed from Real Betis for an undisclosed fee, as part of president Florentino Perez's plan to have more home-grown players at the club.

Ceballos has featured in just 11 of Real's 23 games this season, his total time on the pitch amounting to 406 minutes, which has led him to seek a loan move in January.

According to Italy's Calcio Mercato, both Arsenal and Spurs have joined AC Milan and Roma in the race to sign Ceballos in the new year.

The 21-year-old midfielder has played a crucial role in Real's season so far, by scoring the two goals that beat Alaves back in September. But Zinedine Zidane's team is still eight points off La Liga leader Barcelona, and the French coach has stuck with the experienced players in his squad, like Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Ceballos watched from the bench as Real drew 0-0 on Saturday (December 2) away to Athletic Bilbao, the team's second successive stalemate. Ceballos has not featured in the league since the beginning of November when he came off the bench in the 3-0 win over Eibar with 12 minutes left of the game.

Zidane has, instead, used him in cup competitions, having started and played the full 90 minutes of the 2-2 draw with Fuenlabrada on Tuesday. In January, he will make the decision on whether to remain at the Bernabeu or seek first-team football elsewhere.

His former coach at Real Betis Pepe Mel, who also spent time as manager at West Bromwich Albion, said Ceballos was prepared for the pressure. "Dani has shown that he is ready to make the leap to a big club," Mel said, as quoted by "He's a brave player who isn't afraid of anything."

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal is fifth in the Premier League after Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, while Tottenham is a place and three points behind.

Mauricio Pochettino has built a reputation of nurturing young talent, such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Harry Winks, which may prove to be an attractive prospect for the aspiring Ceballos.
